The Lyric Theatre looks ahead

The Lyric Theatre, Granity, has marked another significant milestone with the successful completion of its Fourth Annual General Meeting, reflecting on a year of growth, achievement and increasing community impact.

Society members gathered to review the organisation's 2025/26 Annual Report, which highlighted continued growth in attendance, volunteer engagement, community participation and financial performance. More than 4,800 visitors passed through the theatre's doors during the year, while ticketed events continued to attract growing audiences and a diverse program of performers from across New Zealand and beyond. The theatre also recorded strong growth in café and bar revenue, increased event income, and ongoing expansion of its digital and community outreach initiatives.

The Annual Report also celebrated the extraordinary contribution of volunteers, whose efforts continue to underpin every aspect of the organisation. From event delivery and hospitality to maintenance, fundraising and community programmes, hundreds of volunteer hours helped ensure The Lyric remained a vibrant cultural hub for Northern Buller throughout the year.

The meeting welcomed two new committee members, Nicki Banks and Martin Terry, whose commitment to community has already made a significant impact. Nicki is widely known for her leadership of the weekly Morning Tea & Natter group, which has strengthened social connections while raising funds for local causes. Martin, alongside Nicki, has helped transform Quiz Night into one of The Lyric's most popular regular community events, bringing together residents for evenings of learning, laughter and friendly competition. Their addition to the governance team brings valuable skills, experience and community perspective as the organisation enters its next chapter.

Among the year's many achievements were the continuation of youth initiatives, restoration work on the theatre's original 1958 cinema projectors, expanded support for touring artists, ongoing investment in volunteer recognition initiatives, and the completion of important building preservation projects that will safeguard the theatre for future generations.

Perhaps most significantly, the organisation now finds itself in a position very few community venues achieve: financial sustainability. Following several years of rebuilding, growth and careful stewardship, The Lyric has established a stable operational foundation that allows the committee to shift its focus from survival to long-term development.

Looking ahead, the organisation's strategic priorities centre on independence, stabilisation and volunteer growth. Investment in digital systems, operational processes and volunteer development will help ensure knowledge, responsibilities and opportunities are shared across a broader base of community members. The goal is not simply to operate a successful theatre, but to create a resilient community organisation capable of adapting, innovating and thriving regardless of future challenges.

As The Lyric enters its 4th year of operation under current management, the vision is increasingly clear: a sustainable, volunteer-powered cultural hub that serves as a model of community resilience, heritage preservation and digital innovation in rural New Zealand.

The committee extends its sincere thanks to every volunteer, supporter, sponsor, performer and attendee who has contributed to the theatre's journey. Together, they continue to demonstrate what can be achieved when a community works collectively towards a shared purpose.
